1 review for VOLLEY: The Board Game

  1. Francesco Gaiffi (verified owner)

Gioco molto interessante!

      “Original Message from Francesco Gaiffi”

A very interesting game! What really struck me is how the designers managed to balance and intertwine the gameplay of a card game, the educational element (introducing volleyball terminology and rules), and above all the REALISM OF THE SIMULATION — the same successful blend already seen in their fencing games, which is clearly becoming something of a “house tradition”.
I would like to point out a couple of details that are close to genius. First of all, the double use of the cards: they can either be played for the effect described in the text or alternatively for their numeric value, adding it to that of the player receiving the ball. This mechanism is intriguing from a gameplay perspective but also very realistic: I might have wanted to execute that attacking play, but I am forced to discard it in order to save the ball. If you think about it, that’s exactly what happens in real volleyball — even the best plans can be disrupted by an imperfect reception or by an emergency situation.
The play cards are also a real delight. They provide a superb way to simulate both the search for a surprising attacking solution by the spiking team and, at the same time, the quick attempt by the defending team to find the most effective positioning. The game forces you to try to guess who the spiker will be by observing the opponent’s arrangement — just like in a real match!
And be careful: the choice of play pattern also forces the attacking team to make tactical decisions that are never trivial, starting from the play cards available in hand. This means you cannot simply give the ball to the strongest player every time, and the game flows unpredictably — it almost feels like watching a high-level match live.
I insist on this point because it is one of the hardest things to reproduce in a tabletop volleyball simulation (I’ve tried it myself, so I speak from direct experience): the variety of plays, avoiding repetitiveness.
In short, another gem — actually a MONSTER BLOCK — by Mario Magni & Co.
